You know what I don't understand, how is it that you MUST have a straw for your drink (which makes you drink faster not slower) but will LICK YOUR FORK AND SPOON CLEAN?! Uh HELLO! That's actually been in another person's mouth... and cleaned the same way the cups were! I personally use straws to identify drinks if I have a Root Beer, Dr Pepper and a Coke on the same tray. But come on people think about that next time you decide to put your fork in your mouth... Oh yea and don't forget when we roll silverware, we try not to but we most likely touched the tip of your fork or the end of your knife or spoon. So really what's worse? I say if you're gonna use a straw ask for plastic wrapped utensils too!

Straws are often used in restaurants to mark the type of beverage for a waiter so they don't get drinks mixed up. Certain coloured straws can mean alcoholic or non-alcoholic beverages, or diet soda. Sometimes two straws are used to mark a particular drink that stands out from the rest. All to help the server. Oh and also to prevent nasty lipstick stains from ladies that overdo it on the lipstick.

Because I don't want to lip a glass after some stranger already did & who knows how their hygiene is---eeewww!! I do use straws at home, too, because it's fun! I always have straws on hand for everyone! It's more sanitary.

Most of the time restaurants offer you a straw, you really don't have to use it. It makes it easier to drink so you don't spill it all over yourself.

They use straws because they are given to them. At home no-one gets up to look for them!

It is the thought that drinking out of a straw is probably cleaner than putting your lips on the glass itself.

In a restaurant, you can't be totally sure of the cleanliness of the glass you are drinking from. Drinking from a straw means your mouth won't have to touch the glass, thus reducing the risk of acquiring germs.

Who says people don't use them at home? We do all the time. But to answer your original question, I use them so I don't have to put my mouth on the actual rim of the cup. Something about knowing that many lips have been on them just doesn't sit well with me.
