It might be loneliness, it might be chance for communication and sharing ideas and experiences, it might be fun and it might be perversion as well (that's the case of our northen Slave neighbours). It all depends on each individual's social, educational, psychological etc status.
In any case, if somebody becomes cybermaniac and gets isolated from friends and their physical presence, it might turn to a real desease.... Pan metron ariston !

It's different for everyone. Personally, I feel I am helping others who may need something I know, and I like that. Plus I think it is a good idea, because sometimes you need to find an answer to a specific issue, and no one you know has relevant knowledge, but somewhere all over the world someone knows about it. I have had useful info on my pets, when they were sick, for example. The vet was not dealing with the problem correctly, and something I learned on Y!Answers helped me save the cat. I hope I have helped people in the same way with my knowledge, or helped interested tourists visit my country's cultural heritage. So frankly, I have a lot to do and I am not lonely, but I spend some time here every day because I think I like to feel needed and "know-it-all". I know this is not good, but sometimes it does help others.

Nope. Not lonely. It's cheap, it's effective, it's a hobby in a way. I know, I know, I could be doing better things with my time (and I am - occasionally, lol). It's also means variety from the people you speak to in your daily life, not that they are boring or anything. And it's totally international - that's interesting.

It's cheap, convenient, and there's an audience. One could be lonely... or not. One could be charmed by the unknown... or not. It depends on the individual in question, I think.
