I know out of the 2500 (or so) species of snakes about 600 are venomous. But how many are dangerous to man? For my sons school project in case you were wondering.

Majority of snakes are non-poisnous. About 30% are poisonous. in Australia majority of snakes are poisonous.
To make sure whether it is poisonous or not. Examine the scales of the belly. It they are wide and run across the width, then they are poisonous. It the belly scales are small, then they are non-poisonous.

I'm not sure myself, I do know however that the Fierce Snake of Australia is the the most deadly, The Black Mamba is the most deadly in Africa and also extremely agressive, the King Cobra causes more deaths than any other (in India anyway, I think in the world but I'm not sure) The various species of North American Rattlesnakes have potentionaly the most potent venom to humans but they only deliver enough venom to kill small rodents (I've watched too many David Attenborough programmes I know) The Fer De Lance is the most deadly snake in South America.

1third of the worlds snakes are deadly to humans. the jacobs viper kills more people than any other snake

the one in yer garden if its a viper or a rattler, the deadliest is the smallest i seen one in sri lanka, looked like blue tinsel foil.
