The above answers are all correct.
Latitude is the angular distance measured north or south in degrees from the equator. By convention, the equator is 0°, the north rotational pole is 90°N, and the south rotational pole is 90°S. Therefore lines of latitude are horizontal on a map, assuming that north is up.
Longitude is the angular distance measured east or west from the prime meridian at Greenwich, England to a maximum of 180°. Longitude lines run up and down, assuming your map or globe has north on top.
Both lines of longitude and lines of latitude follow the curvature of the earth, so are not true lines to a mathematician. Depending on the projection (remember the earth is round), most maps will show longitude as a straight line and latitude as curved lines, especially as you approach either of the poles. Remember that the direction of measurement will be perpendicular to the line you are measuring.
A good way to remember how to distinguish "lat" from "long" is to remember that LONGitude is always LONG. In other words, the lines of longitude always go from pole to pole (one-half the circumference of the earth), whereas lines of latitude get shorter as you approach the poles.
Another way is to remember that Latitude is like Attitude - a person can have a high attitude or a low attitude, just like lines of latitude.
So your choice - "Attitude", "FATitude" or "LONGitude"!

Lines of latitude run from right to left, one over the other, like rungs on a ladder. Lines of longitude run up and down, one beside the other.

The way I remember is as follows... the lines that go side to side (latitude) are long only at the equator and get shorter in diameter as they move up or down the earth, the lines that go up and down (longitude) are equally long in diameter at any point on the earth...hence LONGitude. Hope this helps.

When you think of latitude think of your lats which are located on your sides, and that should make it obvious what longitude should be...this always worked for me!!!

Oh yea! I have been driving along or waiting in line and think of a half dozen great questions and then when I sit down in the evening to dazzle the public my and contacts with my creativity, my mind is as blank as the ASK box.
