I had what I thought was a genuine online friend and today for no reason at all he suddenly turned on me for 'fun'. He called me all sorts of names and when I asked him why he was doing it he said that it was like a lion with it's prey i.e biting it's prey's neck for 'survival'. Why would he do this to me?

Some people feel so insecure and dejected that they feel they must pull others down so they can reach them. It is professionally known as leveling. Lions seek prey for food to be consumed. People seek each other for friendship. Forget about this person. He isn't the type you want to associate with. And NEVER let someone else's opinion become your reality. Let this dog go.

Because some people are like that. In time, you will be able to differentiate between nice people and nasty people. You can do this by listening to what they say and observing what they do and how they do it.
Most of the time it is really easy. Set your own standards and stick to them. This online idiot has lost you as a friend because of what he said to you. Forget him and move on.

Let's face it: within mankind is a kink; and that is it my friend. This kink; or aberration, is what fuels conflict, violence, wars and so on. I have never thought it was natural for violence or the glee that some get from harming others. It is simply a aberration of human nature.
Look to those who treat you with affection, and respect. THEY are your true friends.

It gives the person a sense of control and empowerment. A person with a weak self-esteem needs to do such things to feel better about themselves.

Because he's an idiot. Friends don't do that to friends, whether it is in real life or on-line. Friendship is based on mutual respect, among other things, and he really disrespected you. Any "friend" that insults you is no friend. Time to move on.

He's a jerk. But for real he has low self esteem and acts out to make himself feel better about his crappy life. I wouldn't want a friend like that.
