our contract said our home would be listed until august, but we just found out that we are having a baby and can't afford two budget-altering changes!

Read the rest of your contract. Presumably, their fee is a commission for the sale of your home. No sale, no commission. On the other hand, they have invested time and resources into the marketing of your home to date.
The contracts vary from state to state.

YAY for baby! That is such a blessing.. now honestly you will need to read your contract and read it good... i think you have to wait until contract is up before taking it off the market but that doesnt mean you have to sell to anyone...i found a great real estate help center that may have the information you are looking for..

Check your contract. Some agencies charge a marketing fee if you cancel your listing prior to its end.

If there is a fee, perhaps you can negotiate that it's just a 'temporary' off the market and not be charged.

Everything is negotiable. Even the commission.

No, you'll not have to pay your agent, UNLESS you cancel your contract and then sell your home to one of the buyers, who looked at your place while you still were under contract with your agent.
This is to protect your agent from homeowners, who make a deal with a buyer to sell privately and save on paying commission.
