The best way to network 2 computers in the home environment is to get a small router or switch:

We could answer better if we knew how you are connected to the internet - Cable or ADSL, whether you are using a single modem, or, as many have pointed out, a router. If you aren't using a suitable router - one that can act down as your broadband connection and a network hub - then it is far easier to buy one and replace whatever solution you have now. If you have ADSL, in order of price, I firmly recommend any of the following Netgear routers as they are stable, secure and really, really easier to set up. DG834 (about £45 now) through DG834N RangeMax NEXT ADSL2+ Wireless Router (about £110) Naturally there are cheaper solutions. For this solution: Plug the ADSL lead into the router. Plug a (cat5) network into your main computer, connecting it to the hub at the back of the router. Ditto for the second computer. For file sharing between computers you may need to turn this on (the wizard with XP generally works), remembering to have the same workgroup name for each PC - even if it is the default 'Workgroup' Works pretty much the same for Cable routers.

Using a router two connect 2 PCs is the best course of action here. You will have the ability to set up a home network and be able to have access at the internet at the same time (for the 2 PCs)...

Easy there. First you have to know if the CAT cable you are using is a crossover cable (see the order of the pins on the RJ11, that's the plug thingy, they should be different from one another.). Once you find out if they are crossover cables, you need to assign IP addresses to your pc. The IP settings are under 'my network places,' choose your conection, right click on it, select properties, find TCP/IP, then properties again and it will display the field to input the new IP address. I'd recomend you to google, since you need a step by step tutorial with visual aids:
"connect two computers with a crossover cable."

You need a crossover network cable, its different than a standard network cable as its wires are arranged differently.

Wrong cable.. You need a cross over cable to be able to connect directly!!

Configure each pc with it's unique IP address..

Ex:
PC1: IP 192.168.0.1 Mask: 255.255.255.0
PC2: IP 192.168.0.2 Mask: 255.255.255.0

there u go!
