....to run a few errands because theirs is in the shop. They say they'll have it back in a few hours. 8 hours later, your vehicle has still not returned and there is no answer when you call your friend's cell phone.......

What do you do?

Just for the record....this has NOT happened to me, nor have I ever done this to anyone.

Depends on the friend...if he/she is generally responsible I would give it some more time, then call the police...not for the car but for missing persons...

If the person was irresponsible, I would leave a threatening voice mail something like this:

Hello. This is me. Come on now. Bring my car back or at least tell me what is going on. Even if you are in jail you can call me, collect, if necessary, and let me know. If I don't hear from you in 5 hours I am reporting the car stolen.

And then I would wait. If I didn't hear I would report the car stolen.

But who are we kidding? An irresponsible person wouldn't go near my car. I wouldn't let her/him.

site visitors offences of this sort could nicely be placed into 3 catergorgies; applying, allowing and inflicting. applying- doing the naughty undertaking your self, allowing - allowing somebody to apply the motor vehicle and commit the offence and inflicting- making them use it it to commit the offence (many times once you are the boss). Technically, you're committing the offence of "allowing" the motor vehicle for use in this issue till you are able to teach you probably did no longer understand that this became the case once you leant the van to your chum. this is all right down to what can or can't be proved. site visitors offences are many times absolute offences - as quickly as the offence has been suggested by way of a police officer or digicam, there is not any defence different than particularly circumstances, so your chum has committed the offence and is responsible of it. in the adventure that your chum gave HIS info on his HORT1 style, then this works on your favour - you won't be able to be punished for what he did, even yet it is your van. even with the undeniable fact that, till you are able to teach which you had no thought that a trailer may be used in this issue, you're responsible of allowing him to take action. issues which will bypass on your favour would be in the adventure that your van is properly taxed and MOT'd and which you checked he became insured tocontinual it - this might advise you mostly do the suited undertaking. If the trailer isn't yours and not registered to you, it exhibits which you probably did no longer rapidly grant it. After that, this is as much as whether the courtroom believes you or no longer... site visitors regulation... the two common and exciting... no longer. of course, the clever flow could have been to no longer open the letter, yet return it asserting "no longer commonplace at this handle"... Ahh, the posh of hindsight!

Call the Person's closest relative/friend. If they HAVE been irresponsible, the said contact will do your job (nagging and instilling guilt, that is) for you. Of course, you'll most likely have to go about getting restitution for your damaed vehicle yourself, but you'd probably have to do that, anyhow.

OTOH, if something bad HAS happened, wouldn't it be better to find out sooner than later?

The first thing to do is never panic (that only makes it worse.)
The next thing is to figure-out why they aren't calling and where your car is.
If that doesn't help, call around. Ask their family or other friends if they've seen them lately.
Or wait until the next day to see if they return.
If you are in doubt about any of it, call the police and get help right away because someone might be in danger.
It's better to be safe than sorry.

Congratulations! You have moved up a notch on the scale of common knowledge. You now know that you cannot let friends borrow cars. They either:
a) Do not get back on time
b) Get back with damage done to the car (and not on time)
c) Total your car
