they used to bind their feet because men thought it looked good. it crippled them so they couldn't walk. peasants didn't bind their feet usually because they had to help work in the fields. upperclass woman that didn't bind their feet were considered unmarriagable. their toes did not fall off, they were just tucked under the sole of the foot. only the big toe was not tucked under.

At one time ( I believe the practice stopped for the most part about 60 years ago) women would "bind" their feet to make them small and petite. apparently this was considered desirable for women to have. The end result of binding is not pretty. the feet are broken over and over and the woman's toes would actually be under the foot itself. yikes.

A Long time ago Asian women believed the smaller their feet were the prettier that made them. The goal to eventually cut off the circulation of their toes. The toes will then fall off.

Binding of the feet was practiced by high class Chinese women not Japanese as has been stated by some contributors. The practice has now been outlawed.

They generally do not any longer it was an ancient tradition so that the woman's feet would stay small and delicate as that was one of their standards of beauty(as we as Americans look for bigger "assets" on our women generally). In this day and age though it is not practiced as it once was it is mostly now done by select few who still believe in that beauty standard. No matter how painful it may look.

Ancient japanese tradition. They would bind their feet to make them smaller and more petite, like a ladies foot should be, well that is what they believed. Some traditions never die!

Some Chinese girls/women used to to in order to keep their feet small so that they might walk in what was considered a more 'feminine' way. Eventually this practise was outlawed.
