Actually there are 9:Mollusca, Porifera, Cnidaria, Platyhelminthes, Nematoda, Annelida, Arthropoda, Echinodermata, and Chordata, the phylum to which humans belong. Although there are approximately 35 phyla, these nine include the majority of the species. Many phyla are exclusively marine, and only one phylum is entirely absent from the world's oceans: the Onychophora or velvet worms. The most recently discovered phylum is Cycliophora found in 1993; only three phyla were discovered in the last century.

The 9 phyla, not phylums, are:

Porifera: Sponges, etc.

Cnidaria/Ctenophora (previously named Coelenterata): Coral, Jellyfish, Hydra, etc.

Platyhelminthes: Flatworms.

Nematoda: Threadworms

Annelida: Segmented worms, like earthworms and leeches.

Arthropoda: Animals with jointed exoskeletons like crabs, lobsters, spiders, insects, etc.

Mollusca: Mussels, oysters, snails, octopi, squid, etc.

Echinodermata: Star fish, sea urchins, sea cucumbers, etc.

Chordata: This phylum includes mammals (man, among others), reptiles, fish, amphibians and any other animal with a spinal chord.

You might impress your teacher more if you learned that the plural of "phylum" is "phlya" than by trolling the Web for answers that may or may not be correct.
