Here a man rapes his 10 year old daughter, and gets her pregnant, he's sentenced to 7 years. http://www.nysun.com/article/14139

Here a woman tries to steal Coke's secret recipe to sell it, she is sentenced to 8 years. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070523/ap_on_bi_ge/coca_cola_trade_secrets

I wonder if this has anything to do with the amount of $$$$$$ Coke has, of course it is much more important to send the message that raping your daughter is bad, but not as bad as stealing soft drink recipes.

Honestly; which is worse?

I guess I should also add the question, what would be just punishments to go with the weight of the crime?

Also please note that in the rape case, the man was going to get only 5 years, but when the judge found out he also hit her he bumped it up to 7, so the rape is really only worth a 5 year sentence.

Then you are faced with the issue of the daughter having to give birth to her own sister/brother. The issue is being brought before the Supreme Court in Louisiana I believe as to whether rape is punishable by the death penalty when it happens to someone under the age of 12. Is that sentence the most appropriate?

Personally yes, but then who am I to judge? When I stepped into the bath last night my foot sank.

yep, probably a liberal judge in both cases.

Child molesters in my book are the worst scum on the planet. Hopefully this guy will be place in the general population.. If so, he won't last long.. Someone will stick him.

Industrial espionage like Bill Clinton and Al Gore did for campaign funds to the Chicoms for satellite and rocket technology or military secrets or the formula for one of the world's favorite soda are all pretty heinous . I don't put it in the same category. But trade secrets are theft, and this kind of theft could be something of an industry changing theft. to the tune of billions of dollars in lost revenue for the company, it's stockholders and our mutual fund holdings. I'd give her 40 yrs.

The rapist, castrate him then turn him into the general prison population and advertise he is a child molester. He'll be dead in a week.

Our justice system is flawed. We see this kind of thing all the time. There should be a set of standards across the nation. While judges should get some leeway in punishment determination, selling secrets for money should definitely be less of a crime than raping anybody...let alone your own kid.

Rape of course but in this case the only reason that he got sentenced to 8 years was because it was a federal case with an attempt to committ conspiracy. If this guy had sold them the receipe I bet Coke would have lost millions because of it

Theft is quite bad; but then again is intellectual property really property, and if not then is this really theft, or govt succombing to the elite.

Either way, rape is a bigger evil. But i don't think that you can compare two individual cases and make a far-reaching conclusion on the state of justice. We don't know the intricacies of either case and should perhaps withhold judgement.

I'm suprised she made it to 7 1/2 months pregnant before anyone realised.

Child rape is much worse and there are a few states that are trying to make that point. In Louisiana and Texas is working on it there is new legislation that 1st offense pedophilia is sentenced to 20 to life. If you do manage to get out of prison and you commit a second offense you will be eligible for the death penalty.

The guy had been raping and beating the girl for two years and is an illegal immigrant. In a classic case of shutting the barn door after the horses are gone, the judge told him he would be deported after serving his sentence here.
Whay a travesty of justice.

Why are people not taken out of society I think this left wing view on people is making a retarded lunatic population. Rape should be death penalty as should silly girls pretending they are raped to get attention both types of people have scum dna we don`t want in society. The stealing thing was a fair jail term but when in jail they should have to do hard graft to pay back to victims of crime. I have a solution for everything its called truth

Determining what is worse depends on what aspect you are looking from. Are you speaking legally or morally? Legally, crimes are defined and weighted by society. Morally, personal experience comes into play.

Is a person any less culpable for a crime just because the crime is "victimless"? There is no easy or "right" answer to your question. It's all based on perspective.

I think society today is a bit corrupt itself, so it does not surprise me that this happens, only makes me sad that people put something as stupid as a RECIPE above a person's emotional and physical suffering. Especially since the girl was so young, she is probably scarred for life now. By far would I place the rape case way above the other one, why even ask?
