I have a computer, and my daughter has a laptop. It is difficult to keep constantly switching the internet connection back and forth. Is there anyway to have the internet at both machines at the same time?

Buying a router is the easiest way to share any broadband connection.

If it's just the two of you, you can daisy chain the network connection. Buy another network card (cheap) and install it in the desktop. Now connect your daughter's laptop to your computer with a CAT5 cable. Set up the network wizard on both machines (it's fairly self explanatory). Then, right click on your network connection to internet and turn sharing on. Now both PCs can use the same internet, without need to buy a router.

Yes. This is very easy, and most households now do what you are asking. I assume you have cable or DSL internet.

First, buy a Linksys WRT54G Wireless-G Router, available here: http://www.amazon.com/Linksys-WRT54G-Wireless-G-Router/dp/B00007KDVI/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/102-4523575-3746531?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1179955982&sr=8-1 for about $50. Linksys is a very common brand.

You plug your cable into this unit, then both pc's plug into it. If your laptop has wireless, just use the laptops wireless connection (usually automatic). Both pc's will have full time access at full speed.

Using this unit also adds additional security against people on the internet, but you still need virus scanners!

If you have DSL it's quite simple but costly.
First buy a router, which should be prices anywhere between 45-60 dollars. Then just follow the instructions, a router is just what it sounds like it routes the internet service to multiple ports. There should be 4 ports when you buy the router.

Yes, what you want is a home network... Google: how to set up a home network for a more detailed explanation, and pictures, which I can't post here.

I'd assume your daughter will use wireless? Then you can set it up for both, wired (your pc) and wireless (for laptop).
