I have an old KMart lawn mower with a tecumpseh engine, if the blade is not on , or loose, will that prevent it from starting?

It was running, then after it was shut off, it wouldn't start. Just during a simple inspection, I discovered the blade was loose. After taking it off to check it out I found that the little "****" that prevent the blade from slipping were worn. I didn't want to put it back on, but I also didn't want to buy another, unless I knew the mower was running.

Running without a blade probably won't matter, although the designers almost certainly included the mass of the blade when computing how much flywheel to put on it. IOW, it might run with a bit more vibration from the power impulses, but that won't be a problem.

As for running a mower with a LOOSE blade... whaddaya get a kick outta living dangerously? ;-)

well actually my neighbor has a john deere lawn mower with a 3 cylinder diesel.Gary above is dead wrong about diesels.they produce plenty of power.my neighbor has 2 gmc 4 wheel drive trucks with diesels and i would not put my gmc 4.3 sonoma against either one in a short drag race.his newest will smoke the rear tires easily.the advantage of a gas engine in smaller cars is weight.a diesel engine is very heavy when compared to an equivilent size gas engine.the main reason larger vehicles use a diesel is they generally produce more torque for pulling large amounts of weight although there are some cars that use a diesel.VW jetta is one for instance which runs very well and gets 50mpg.a diesel also lasts considerably longer given proper care.

Not having a blade, or even having a loose blade, on will cause the engine to rip the starter cord right out of your hand wwhen you try to start it. And if it does start, the engine will overspeed, causing internal damage. Do not try to start it without a blade of some sort on it.

No. The blade has nothing to do with the engine running. Check and clean the carb. Check/change the spark plug.

No that wouldn't affect it at all. First thing to check (other than gas) is the condition of the spark plug. If it is totally gunked up either clean it or replace it and chances are good it will start.
