The problem with cable companies is that they identify you by your computer's MAC address - which is different on every computer and laptop. It'll become very tedious to make the laptop use the PC's mac address.

I'd advise buying a Cable/DSL router (it doesnt have to be wireless if you can live with the laptop needing an ethernet cable.)

Plug the router into the cable modem and the PC into the router. Following the routers instructions, you can set the router to clone the PC's mac address to your cable company, so it looks like you're connecting with the PC, whereas you can now use the laptop and PC at once.

You do not need an ADSL router as you have cable.
Brands I'd recommend are Linksys and Netgear

If you just plugged it in then no it won't work unless it has been set up with the proper settings. The settings aren't hard to copy over to the laptop but as you mentioned the best would be to use a router so no cable switching would be necessary. If you have wireless on your laptop then you could get a wireless router and run the pc off the wired and the laptop wireless.

edit: As mentioned above the cable co. will only allow one connection per service which is why almost any router you buy now is a NAT router which hides the users behind the one allowed device (the router). It runs between the cable modem and the computers.

Hello; in answer to your question, just put the CD in the laptop and run the program, so you can simply switch the cables... but it would be worth the money to get a cheap wireless router (if your laptop has wifi, if not, you may also want to buy a card for it), then you'd be able to go online virtually anywhere within 100 meters (or better, depending on your router, and laptop) of your router... I'd just go with a generic 802.11b (or slightly newer, say 802.11g) I put a setup at my house; 3 network cards, and a router... all for about $45!

It's not necessary to spend all kinds of money on the latest router technology, having a router that can handle 150Mbps doesn't do a hell of a lot of good, if your connection speed to the internet is only 1Mbps, right? But ppl do it all the time, thinking it'll speed things up! The only concern for an older 802.11b setup is how many PCs will be on it, and what type of security is built in?

I hope this helped!

try plugging in the ethernet cable into the laptop. Shut down the laptop. Turn off the power to the cable modem, wait about 15 seconds and power the modem back up. turn on the laptop. You should only have to do this one time for the laptop to "recognize" the modem. If all else fails, check to make sure your drivers are installed on the laptop for the ethernet controller. It never hurts to have a router but if your drivers aren't installed it would be a waste of time and money.

first element: to connect 2 computers do no longer waste money. purely use pass cable! If u have have been given change and u wanna use it, connect 2 computers to change through at present day cable. Now open community connection properties and assign IPs to the two computers. For comp that's no longer utilising broadband, say a million, provide DNS and gateway of the pc 2. Now, in the equipment>internet concepts>connections>LAN settings of IE of comp a million provide it ip of 2d comp and port 8080. get exhilaration from... connect the comp 2 to internet and then comp. a million nonetheless having prob, see IP addresss of 1st comp given through broadband corporation and write it in proxy tackle of 1st comp. get exhilaration from....

Did you tell your laptop to look to the RJ45 port for internet connections? Start/Control Panel/Internet Options. Now click the Connections tab and then click setup.
Welcome to the New connection Wizard - click "next"
Choose "Connect to the Internet - click "next"
Set up my connection manually - click "next"
Connect using a broadband connection that is always on - click "next"
Click "Finish"

go to tools on the internet web page and click on internet options and click on connections and then click on wlan, you should be able to double the enable button on the broadband and disable it. i hope this works. or go to your wireless menu and click on properties and that should help out too.
