No, racism is when your current actions mirror some societal evil that has happened in the past. Since there is no painful evil history of blacks excluding whites from music competitions, you are not being racist if you are black and you vote for an american idol contestant because she is black. That's not racism, it's personal discrimination, or nepotism, but racism is a very different an much more serious thing than discrimination.
If all the white judges started calling the black contestants "coloreds" and told them to stand in the back, then that would be racism. It's important not to make light of racism or the term will lose it's meaning and we'll forget why our national values reject it so harshly.

I guess technically any time you favor someone based on race it could be considered racist, however, the whole premise of American Idol is based on voting for who you like best. (they try to tell us it's strictly a singing competition, but we all know that's not quite true). Last year I voted for Chris because I liked his "rocker" style and found him attractive. I guess that would make me prejudiced against ugly country singers. :)
I think that if this is the only place you are using a race as a factor, you are ok. Just the fact that you are concerned about it says that you are a good person.

American Idol isn't racist. Did all of us take place to forget approximately that Ruben Studdard and Fantasia are the two considered one of African-American descent and have been the two "American Idols"? i've got no longer considered many asians or hispanics on the show, so, is American Idol 'racist' against them too? i think of anybody is finding too a lot into this. If somebody gets the smallest quantity of votes, they are voted off. basic as that.

would it be racist for a white person to only vote for the whites? ya, probably
voting for any other reason besides who sang best just seems out of line with what the show's supposed to be about. but its nice to have a favorite to cheer for, and the good news is, no one knows who you voted for but you, so you can vote however you want.

I would think racist. As I recall, Dr. King said to judge not by the color of skin but by the quality of character (or in this case, talent)

Racist! As you thought. Why? Because you are basing your vote on the color of the skin...not the voice! I'm still upset because Melinda went home and I am as white as a lily!

That's racist, favoritism is another form of racism. It's not a very important form of it, but by definition yes, it is.

Well at least you were able to correct it this time. Some people know that they are being racist when they do something on purpose and yet still keep doing it. Kudos to you.............. ;o)

Yes, it is. Inconsequential in the big picture, but supporting or denying anyone simply because of their race is racist.

Yes it is, you should vote for the person because you think they are a really good singer, not because of someones race.
