I look for a talented writing style, humour, and subtleties - I don't mind if all you need to know to figure out "whodunnit" is given to you, as long as it's done right - Ngaio Marsh is an author who gives you all the information you need to solve the mystery yourself, but you have to really be paying attention. The characters need to be well-developed and "3D" also; I have to be able to imagine they're people I could meet on the street.
lol, guess I'm picky?

I want a well crafted plot that keeps me guessing - lots of twists. The actual 'crime' or 'mystery' doesn't particularly matter. Romance, if it fits into the plot, is fine. Espionage and technological thrillers are hot right now but I find most of them to be fairly easy to figure out. Murder, if the perpetrator isn't obvious, is interesting - especially if the story gets into the more psychological aspects of the killer. The same goes for missing persons/kidnappings.
Men, statistically, commit the most crimes. Having a woman perpetrator can be a good twist but most writers tend to stereotype their female criminals.

I am with Puff. My fiction reading consists of mainly cozy mysteries (those with little violence). Also, I love humor thrown in. My favorite series are:
Nancy Atherton- Aunt Dimity Series
Lawrence Block- The Burlar Who... series (Bernie Rhodenberr is one of the funniest characters ever)
Cleo Coyle- The Coffeehouse mysteries
Diane Mott Davidson- The Goldy Schulz series
Janet Evanovich- 1 for the money, etc
Sue Grafton- A is for Alibi... etc
Joan Hess- Claire Malloy and the Maggody series
All of Tim Myers series
Robert Parker- Spenser series

I only read cozy mysteries. I can't stand gore.
I like mysteries that are about missing people and also ones about finding out the theft. I am not a huge fan of murder ones. I can't say I suspect one sex over the other.

The first person I usually suspect is a guy. I look for lots of suspence, romance, some laughs, and a huge twist.

Seems like everyone suspects a man. So if the antagonist turns out to be female, wouldn't that be quite the twist? I like to be surprised. A good author keeps you guessing right up to the end. Any of those sub-genres appeal to me. But a good story must have twists, turns, surprises and keep me turning pages. My favorites include Ken Follett, Elmore Leonard, John Irving, Katherine Dunn, to name a few.

you're able to watch Black Butler. it is so extraordinary!!!! it extremely is a secret, comedy, secret, and suspense anime. the 1st episode has not something to do with the main storyline, so I advise which you watch as much as the 0.33 episode and choose wether or not you prefer to provide up on it then, besides the undeniable fact that it is the suited anime I even have ever watched. It has 2 seasons, the 1st with 26 episodes (plus a humorous OVA in case you will locate His Butler, Preformer) and the 2nd season has 13 episodes (plus 2 OVAs). you are able to watch it dubbed on hulu for loose, however the 2nd season is on youtube's funimation channel. wish this facilitates!
