My son got hit with a bat on accident by his sister. He has a knot but we are using ice and I think he is ok. I know he has to stay awake for awhile but I don't know how long.

If we go to the er or dr every time he gets a bump on his head we would have to move in there.
It isn't cruel to keep him awake at 4 or 5 in the evening for a few hours. He is always hard to wake up. I am keeping ice on it for the swelling and he says he feels fine. He is 4.

2-3hrs should be plenty. You basically are looking for disorientation, extreme sleepiness. Especially since the bump is an "outty", and not going into the head, I think you are probably on track, and he is fine. Kids, just love trying to scare the crap outta ya!

It is OK to let him go to sleep. Just every few hours (2-3) wake him up and if he wakes up easily he is just fine. Keeping someone awake is just cruel. Seek a Dr.'s care if he becomes disoriented, sever headache, or he is hard to wake up.

Contrary to popular belief...you do not want to keep someone awake after a head injury.
But you do want to wake them every couple of hours to make sure they are OK.
If when you wake them up, they are their normal grumpy self and can answer few simple questions...like tell me what happened to you....they are OK...just check for 24 hours or so.
good luck

keeping him awake doesn't prove a concussion or not.
what you need to do is watch him for signs of extreme fatigue, and if you want to, waken him every two hours thru the night. If you cannot wake him, he has a concussion and needs medical care..

If he has a knot as you say. I'm not sure maybe he needs to see a doctor to make sure it's not serious.
