Because the Mayan calendar ends on the winter solstice, 2012, which is December 21st for that year. It has also been worked out precisely using an ancient Chinese text called the "I Ching", which also dead ends mathmatically in December 2012.

One other interesting fact is that Astronomers have mathmatically plotted out that on the day of the Winter Solstice,December 21, 2012, the Sun, Earth, and Galactic core will be in direct alignment, an event that will only happen once every 25,400 years. At the moment they move out of alignment, The Earth will officially pass through the center-line of the Milky Way Galaxy and move above it. They believe this event may cause a shift in the magnetic pole that will create cataclysms like earthquakes, floods, and drastic temperature shifts. It is said that there is evidence that a shift like this has happened before, the last time, shifting from its axis approximately along the equator to the position it is in now. At least, that is the theory. The Discovery Channel has been wrong before...

Another interesting note that is, if they are wrong, NASA has been tracking a giant, planet-killer sized meteor that will come into a near-Earth orbit where they believe it may collide with the planet in 2019...

Hope this helps...

This one freaks me out. I'm not a Millinealist, but if I was...

The Ancient people of Meso America are noted by scientists for their incredibly accurate calendars which could predict not only growing seasons, but also eclipses - etc. They are even more accurate then modern day calendars.

There are three parts to the calendar - much like ours, day months year - but the cycle is different. One is every 72 hours, one is 4 weeks and on is 28 years.

There is also a predictive element as some wise man wrote down predictions for each cycle - most of which sound a lot the same, predicting famine, pestilence and a lack of faith inthe government (year these things occur frequently in every 28 year cycle).

The final thing about the calendar is it also predicts "ages". The meso americans believed there were a limited number of ages in history. 5 or six depending on the source (the western source, not the meso american). the fifth age is supposed to end, according to the Calendar Dec 21 2012. there will be a mass destruct ionaccording to the prophesy and afterwards, people will discover there "try spiritual purpose".

Interesting side notes. In the bible code. found passages that say "12-21-2012" "comet" "Destruction" and "God's Hand will intervene". Or something to that effect.

Yeah, ok. Prophesy hoo haa. Also occuring on december 21 2012, the planet earth will be most closely aligned with the center of the Galaxy. This happens every (?) million years. Many scientists think this is one of the reasons our ozone is depleting - which combined with gravitational forces will make us more vunerable to Comet impacts.

Creepy, hun?

That is a good question. From what I have read there have been many predictions that land on that date. Nostradamus himself ends his predictions with the end of mankind as we know it 13 years after the year 2000. The Mayans have a calender that has a galactic year that ends dec 21 2012 as well. I would imagine that there are many prediction that coincide with this date primarily because of these quite well known predictions. Perhaps many predicters are using this date so as to add support to thier own view of an end of times scenario. Whatever the outcome, it makes for some facinating comments.

from a purely physical standpoint, most of the calendars are lunar calendars which average somewhere around a 10,000 year cycle. Roughly these calendars all end around 12/21/2012 because that is the end of that 10,000 year cycle. its really just one of those mathematical progression cycles that, with a common focal point, (the lunar cycle) ends up in a common point. One thing should be better understood though- these so-called end times predictions (except for the bible which DOES NOT have an actual time-table) actually point to a coming of a new cycle-the cycle actually resets and starts over, it doesn't really end.
in nature everything has greater and lesser cycles, even the galaxy has a rotation period, much like the face of a clock. just because something goes back to its rough point of origin in the cycle (the clock goes to midnight/2400/0) doesn't mean the clock stops time.

The dont. Since the beginning of time there have been doomsayers predicting the end of days. Many of the dates predicted have come and gone.
Dont forget, not only was 01/01/2000 a nightmare for Billy Gates and the boys at 1 Microsoft Way Redmond, WA, it was supposed to be the end of time.

I wouldnt worry too much about it until you see the 4 horsemen and I dont mean Tully Blanchard, Arn Anderson, and the boys.

Most researchers that I've spoken to or read their work agree that this is due to the fact that the Mayan calendar, known to be one of the most complete and accurate ever found, appears to end with the year 2012.

They don't.

End of times predictions have being going on since before the fall of the Roman Empire. I predict that all of them were as accurate as the Mayan calendar one will prove to be.

they say it's the end of an era.. scientists even say that the planet might suffer a major shift change, since the aztecs use to rely on the positions of the planets and stars, that's how they invented the calendar... s0, if they stopped on that date, that might mean, that the planets moved or something like that.
