~Containment in the east was totally unsuccessful and was one of the causes of the American Revolution. The British were aware that they could not protect British subjects west of the Allegheny Mountains and for that reason, not to mention the reluctance to go to war with France over colonial expansion into French occupied territory as well as various agreements and treaties with the indigenous people on that side of the mountains, the British attempted to contain the colonies in the east. The colonials, on the other hand, ignored the rightful mandates of their own government, the crown, and pushed westward. The resulting conflict led, in part, to the Revolution, the loss of the colonies which became the US, and the near annihilation of the Native American people. You should be able to find this in most any US history book of resource.

Or did you mean the east as in Asia. You should have been more specific. I'll guess you'll have to do some studying after all.
