If you only use an iPOD, then aac is a great format and has some advantages over mp3.

If you need portability to other devices, mp3 is the standard.

While only Ipods can read AAC format it is much better because it is smaller than mp3 if you had a library full of mp3 songs it would take up more room than a library of AAC. If you have a Ipod I would suggest converting mp3 songs to AAC to save room. Overall, AAC is better.
