Iran's deadline to comply with the UN is tomorrow and they've not complied one little bit . In fact they've just announced an expansion of their nuclear program in the face of the entire civilized world . 9 U.S. warships went thorough the straits of Hormuz this morning as a warning to Iran that we're serious . Normally we'd announce such an exercise to prevent any mistakes about what we're doing, but not this time . Nope, this time it wasn't even scheduled as acknowledged by our military commanders . I think it's coming soon . And I don't think we'll use ground troops, other than a few special covert teams for specific sites . I think we'll use naval and air power to destroy this threat and perhaps some or much of their Radical Islamist government .
I'm also curious as to how long you think it will last . My guess is hours or days at most . And I'm leaning towards hours because we have to wipe out all capabilities of retaliation .

What's your guess ?

Monte B - Did you somehow see a different question than the one posted ? Perhaps it's those 'special' computers they give to terrorists !!

Pip - Not to insult you, but what box of cereal did you get that type of logic from ? . . . . 'It'll convince others to get nukes" WHAT?
They will be bombed BECAUSE they have nukes .

Pip - The people of Iran are for it . In fact they've been practically begging for us to free then from this Radical Islamist tyranny . The bad guys will be killed, so it's kinda hard for them to remember anything if they're dead .

Hmmm . . . I'll say by end of summer. I do hope it's of limited duration, but I am more concerned that we get the job done.

I fear that we may be fighting a losing battle - that keeping the nuclear genie in the bottle indefinitely is a losing proposition - but sitting back and doing nothing (i.e., jawboning meaninglessly while Iran works furiously to get nukes and use them) is NOT an option in my book.

If we go down, let's go down swinging.

I'm in an apocalyptic mood today . . . :(

First off to those that are saying our military has no ground forces capability I call BS! With a combined forces number between the US Army and Marines we have almost 1.5 million forces. You can count half of that as people in support roles so that still puts us at around 700,000 available combat forces minus what we have in Iraq and Afghanistan.

That being said. Earnest. I truly hope it doesn't come to that. Hopefully diplomacy will work. But if the threat of Iran gaining nukes looks eminent. We will have no choice. We already know they are supplying the insurgency in Iraq, and probably in Afghanistan as well. What would make anybody think they wouldn't happily give these terrorist a nuke to use?
If we do hit them, it will be by end of summer I'm sure. It will also mostly be tactical air forces doing the work starting with B-2's and going from there. That is our normal procedure.

Earnest ... Should we "hit" them? Perhaps yes, but I think it's a bit too early for that. The Iranian nuclear development project definitely needs to be stopped, but I'm confident that more diplomatic effort would be used before deciding to strike.

If someone even sneezes the wrong way in the Middle East, the price of crude jumps $5, it seems. If something else occurred to further disturb the delicate peace in the region, the price would jump in $10 increments by the hour, I suspect.

I don't think the task force is going for a fight. But if they're provoked or challenged, things could escalate very, very quickly.

A similar exercise occurred in the 80's on President Reagan's watch off the coast of Libya. Muammar Qaddafi made a large territorial water claim that was not internationally recognized. President Reagan essentially said, "Oh, yeah? We'll see about that," and the U.S. intentionally conducted military exercises near or within the area claimed by Libya. Qaddafi dispatched some fighters who locked-onto our aircraft. We locked on theirs. Results: Two Libya fighters "splashed."

Yes, there were some additional tit-for-tats including the bombing of the TWA 747, but they ultimately payed $2.7 billion for the "privilege," (see my link) not to mention many years of international sanctions against them.

You know, it never ends. Kane killed Abel and there's been fighting and wars ever since.

I agree it is coming, I don't know when or how, but I know it is. I really hope Iran will back down, but I don't think they will.

CNN: U.S., Britain to press for new sanctions against Iran
UNITED NATIONS (CNN) -- American and British diplomats at the United Nations say they will press ahead for new sanctions in the wake of the latest defiance of U.N. demands that Iran stop enriching uranium.

A report issued Wednesday by the United Nations' nuclear watchdog -- the International Atomic Energy Agency -- said Iran has not only ignored the call to halt its nuclear work but has also increased its activities.

The U.N. Security Council has so far imposed two rounds of limited sanctions on Iran. It is unclear how much political will there would be from veto-holding members Russia and China for further significant sanctions.

Iran won't have the terrific relationships with Israel and the U. S. and quite a number of different different center jap international places, yet they don't seem to be the ideal possibility you chalk them as much as be. If Iran desperate immediately they have been going to flow on a quest for international domination, they could lose in the long-term. They lack the skill to become a respected possibility that can overtake us. i do no longer think of maximum of the middle East fears Iran, they're the two on stable, undesirable or impartial kinfolk. international places like Syria, Iraq and Lebanon do no longer concern Iran, the Saudis and Israel are no longer vast followers, and something of the international places like the UAE and Kuwait could desire to truly care much less it variety of feels. the unconventional Islamic management in Iran is dropping ability. Western innovations are permeating Iran's adolescents, they're adopting them, and that they are going to become the era that shapes Iran. i think of that's in uncomplicated terms a count number of time in the previous the overly conservative ingredient of their management vanishes and the possibility of conflict diminishes.

It's obvious we're going to hit Iran and my guess would be cruise missiles and well placed air strikes coordinated by special operations forces that are probably already in country.

Though i must say as much as i hate Mahmoud imablowjob and the rest of the Iranian nut jobs in power.. I hope the weasel backs down.
If we hit Iran gas prices are going to soar to unimaginable levels ..I'm paying over $3.50 a gallon right now and if it gets much higher than that..I'll be walking 45 miles each way to work...

Air strikes, artillery, cruise missiles, and possibly tactical nuclear weapons....and Israel might be involved.

If we commit to do this, we will have to deal with the repercussions of the civilian casualties we cause, and it won't be good.

Don't write Iran off so quicky. They supposedly have one of the strongest militaries in the Middle East, and they haven't been pounded into the ground for the last ten years like Iraq was.

It may just be a scare tactic manuever, but we would only have to bomb the 1 oil refinery they have that serves the entire country. Iran actually has to import much of it's gasoline. I couldn't fathom us sending ground forces in to try to occupy the country, so it would just be more like the 1st Gulf War as far as air strikes, bunker busters and cruise missiles. From what I understand they built the research facilities in heavily populated areas, (in the typical Muslim "hide amongst civilians" fashion), so any attack would be like whacking a hornets nest. They claim to have suicide bombers around the world, and I don't doubt there would be widespread turmoil as a result, but Iran is definitely the head of the snake, unfortunately I think this blow needs to be dealt eventually.

I agree. We're gonna hit Iran. My guess is within the week, with air strikes, initially lasting a few days. For some reason, I can't seem to get exited about it. Actually, I have a very bad feeling. Like, When is someone going to bomb us BECAUSE we have nukes ?

2007-05-23 10:24:46 · answer #9 · answered by T S 5 · 1 1

honestly.. I hope this doesn't happen.. right now the people of Iran like us.. even if Tehran doesn't.. after this.. the whole nation will be against us.

now that aside.. assuming it does happen it will be all navy and airforce.. we don't have the ground troops to go in anyway.

it'll last about 12 hours and be mostly bombing

and it'll convince more of the world that they NEED nuclear weapons to keep us from bombing them.

I don't have a good answer to this problem.. but I don't think this is a good answer either.

also.. though our actions will end soon... Iran wouldn't soon forget it.. and it would be the beginning of something much larger.
