The trumpet like flowers are only in the Spring and the "horn" part points downward. I've heard these trees nicknamed "elephant ear trees" and also heard this is the wood most commonly used now for piano keys (versus the old fashioned ivory). they are common in Harford county and can grow like 50' tall. What in the dickens are they called?

I agree with the above, Paulownia tree. Actually Paulownia is the genus name for many different species found around the work, but mostly China and other Asian countries.

The genus was names in honor of Queen Anna Pavlovna of The Netherlands (1795–1865), daughter of Tsar Paul I of Russia.

Paulownia fortunei is a fast-growing tree that is grown commercially for the production of hardwood timber, but in this country it is mainly an ornamental growing multiple feet a year.

Paulownia tomentosa is listed as an invasive species in the southeastern United States, having been introduced there as an ornamental tree for its decorative flowers.

It is important to know what Paulownia you are planting. While bother are fast growing, the P. tomentosa can escape cultivation in milder areas, that is it becomes a weed displacing native plants.

Cottonwood trees is what we sometimes call them down here (but most commonly, elephant ear trees), but in nurseries they are called Paulownia. I'm sure it's the same one that you're talking about though, purple trumpet blooms in spring, leaves can easily get 12" across and have a kind of...furry texture on top, for lack of a better word. The backs of the leaves are sometimes kind of sticky. They get HUGE and grow quick.

This i could desire to admit isn't a controversy i'm familiar with, even though it appeared like it could desire to be cool to correctly known. So I typed elephants into the quest engine and a rapid seem at their anatimy revealed some somewhat exciting information. the 1st venture i chanced on replaced into Asian elephants have vast ears approximately 60cm x 30cm and African elephants have somewhat vast ears measuring 183cm x 114cm approximately thrice the dimensions of their asian cousins. An elephants ear is such an important area of the animal and performs quite a few important roles ensuring their well-being and survival. The elephants ear has a important function protecting an elephant mushy via regulating its physique temprature, somewhat necessary in a warm climate, incredibly once you weigh as much as a form of babies. as a results of fact of an elephants great mass, and low floor area in assessment, warmth loss via radiation is relatively somewhat inefficient. the vast floor area of an elephants ear with that's great community of veins and arteries helps the warmer blood from its inner purposes to be cooled because it passes via this community for use returned. On a warm day in Africa, elephants could be seen status down wind with there ears open, allowing the cool breeze blow for the era of their warm arteries. African elephants additionally use them to circumvent skill preditors, to boot as a signaling gadget. An elephant can on an common day haer yet another 4 km's away and while its quiet over 9 km's spanning a 100km radius. And purely like human fingerprints no elephant has ears comparable to yet another. Scientists additionally now have faith that they permit the species an infrasound capibility, relatively allowing them a secret language as a results of fact unly elephants can hear the frequency.
