More details:
we have communicated over the last couple of weeks, while solving a work related problem. To confirm everything was now OK I sent a single smiley.
He rang immediately and said "did you just send me a smiley?" I thought it was wierd as he obviously knew I had....I was worried I might have unknowingly made a pass at him or something!

That completely depends on what happened the last time you spoke or saw eachother. try to think of a moment or situation you would feel angry to get a smiley...? that might clarify things?
