Simple anatomy...
There is only so much blood in the body so if you tie it up flowing around big muscles, there isn't enough to run the brain.
Robin Williams had a good quote along the same lines. "Isn't it ironic that God gave man two heads but only enough blood to run one at a time"...or something like that.
