I don't know why he does now but he beat Mark McGwire in the 1996 derby in probably the best HR derby ever. It is definitely not the same reason as A-Rod. The HR Derby disturbs many players' swing causing them to have an uppercut and swing for the fences, which produces pop flies. Instead of their more natural level swing which will produce home runs on normal pitches. When you're seeing 70 mph meatballs its fine to use a 45 degree uppercut. But when you're facing real life Major League pitching, all you will hit is pop flies.

If I was a pitcher in the Majors, I would go after him every time that's what I would be getting payed for, and if he gets a hit or a home run then so be it, I would not stop going after him and if I had to give him a free pass I 'd hit him just to let him know I'm not scared of him!

If i was a pitcher facing Bary Bonds. I would throw outside make him reach for it. hes either gona get all of it or hes gona foul it off and then once i have 2 strikes throw a fast ball high out of the strike zone and see if he goes for it

If a base was empty and it didn't seem to have too much effect on the game, throw at him.
if the game is on the line, grab your hamstring and screem during the last pitch to the previous batter.
