One of them is older (b only), and the other one is newer. I also have a netgear USB wireless adaptor and a computer. I am trying to link my XBOX360 to my network across two flights of stairs, and I don't have enough money to buy any more expensive bridges.

Please read the entire question and its details. I believe that I said that I can't buy any super long ethernet cable and that there were two flights of stairs between the two places.

If you have an older ( pre version 5 ) Linksys WRT54G router there is commonly used 3rd party firmware which will allow the wrt54g to work as a bridge.
I have read that the newer Linksys router ( bad news) can be done with the product dd-wrt . You have limited functions available so i do not know if this ability is included.
You will also void your warranty but these 3rd party firmwares are more than commonly used and are the standards of networking fanatics / nutcases
Sveasoft is the most well known of the firmwares.

2 routers on the same connection are bad news. They tend to cause confusion in routing. You would be better with a wireless access point or range extender. Range extenders are a cheap option. Alternatively if you have dsl and other telephone jacks you could move the router to a mid way jack.

Ok firstly, you need to provide more details like which model numbers the routers are. It caries between router brand and model numbers

yeah, just run an ethernet cable between them, don't forget the uplink port.. so:

router 1 ---------------------------------- router #2
port # any ----------------------------.> port uplink
