H is a rescued pet, and is almost 1 1/2 years. We have one that is already housebroke.

I don't know of any way to stop them from marking their territory this is an instinct.
If it's more of a house training I would suggest crate training.
Good luck.
also you might ask the vet they may know of something sure can't hurt to ask

i housebroke my rescue by tying his leash to my belt and making sure that he didn't try to go. everytime he looked like he was circling or sniffing, i took him outside. i didn't let him play, just kept saying, 'go potty' over and over again. then i praised him like CRAZY when he went! it took a bit, as he was a rescue, but it worked like a charm. you just have to be patient and have some really good cleaning supplies. (don't forget your pup's sense of smell is WAY better than ours and he'll know where he went before if you don't get the area really clean!) good luck :) oh, and props to you for getting a rescue!

If he's marking territory, it's because he feels threatened by another male dog. Is he neutered? If not, there is a good way to stop it.

Crate the dog until he's housebroken.

let him know what he did was wrong by putting his nose up to the "marked area" and say no-no, bad dog ect. then don't give him any attention.
