Poltergiest was truly scary. Urban setting, beseiged family, sense of hopelessness. It was great.
I also enjoyed Carrie. It works you up to that finale and you're just blown away.
Recently, one I saw, was Vacancy which I thought was very suspenseful and creepy.

when i was a kid it was E.T. he would chase me in my dreams and call my name and i could never seem to hide from him. damn alien! other then that, any scarey movies with dead evil kids in them (the grudge, the ring, emily rose)
