The short life span is a product of the pet Industry, they really do live a long long time if well cared for. I have read accounts of them living up to 7 years.

Many fish should live longer than what most in home aquariums do. A lot of websites and books will publish an average lifespan in a home aquarium so that buyers who kill their fish in a year or 2 dont feel as bad and are willing to buy another. So technically (in a home aquarium with only average care) a betta will live about 2-3 years when in reality they could easily live double that if given the proper care in a filtered and heated tank.

It's not that some naturally live longer than others, it's a matter of proper care. Given good care most any can make it 5 years or more. It's also a matter of good information from websites. Some are simply superior to others.

(no, I don't know which he used and am not slamming any particular website)
