Think about it this way, marijuana is now prescribed to cancer patients because it helps with the pain. It is now prescribed for many different ailments now. Can you imagine how much money in the government would be lost if they were to make it legal?

Yeah seriously. I don't think niether should be used regularly. But why aren't both legal, or both illegal. I think Maarijuana should be legalized, because people do what they are told not to, even if it is illegal. Like for example, teens are always doing what they are told not to do, that's just the way they are, and then if you tell them to do something...They wont do it, or atleast not do it alot. So if you were to legalize it for those over a specific age, then what's the difference? People will either get bored with it, or do it regularly, it's like ciggerettes, some people stick wit h them and some just never get addicted or some only do it occasionally.
But alcohol...I believe that is a problem, but I don't believe it should be illegal. My mother had my brother when she was 16, when he turned 1, a drunk driver ran into the car he and my mom were in. My mom survived, but my brother didn't. Alcohol is a killer, and I say that it would be better if they could prevent some of those accidents.

this is a question that has me puzzled also, Alcohol has destroyed may lives but yet the government still prof its off of it, that's why it is legal , pot would be very hard for the government to profit off of because people can just grow their own and not have to pay taxes on them, so instead they spend millions of dollars try to destroy pot patches , I am from Kentucky and it it a crop that is sought after by the state police with the helicopters setting up surveillance and many hours of man power to try and catch the growers, when really the resources could be used for better things, the government is not worried that this is a "gate way drug" but worried that they cant profit off of it like they can for the sale of alcohol., if they could it would already be legalized .

Because then they would not get the billions of dollars we waste every year on the War on Drugs.

Remember people-- when the government declared War on Drugs they created a civil war here in the US. A large portion of our country consists of people at war with our own government. The President of the United States went on national television and declared war. Since you cant have a war against an inanimate object the war must be against the users. That us folks or at least anyone who uses!!!

you know? i'd be all for the legalization of marijuana use except for ONE thing i can't get past:

there is NO TEST available that can determine if someone is under the influence of marijuana at the PRESENT TIME. Alcohol has a breathylizer and (better) the blood test; there is NOTHING for pot. That makes it dangerous to legalize from a DUI standpoint....and i think that's justified.

like i said, i'd be ALL FOR IT, if that test came into existence. i know it would UNDERMINE drug dealers, it would pad (through taxation) state governments, it would control use, it would save money in the convictions for marijuana crimes, but ....it would add more danger to the roads.

youre right; marijuana is SO HARMLESS in comparison to alcohol, but it's harder to control from a 'policing' standpoint....and due to the serious lack of response time that marijuana causes (iknow first hand), it needs to be used responsibly....and that wouldn't be the case in regards to driving.

PS- instead of just 'thumbs-downing' me, convince me otherwise! lol.

I'm all about legalizing it but gschmitt's got a good point. I just don't see how it's a crime if I smoke a little on my back porch and relax and watch the birds.

We need to make the change because government won't. become active in educating and petitioning to change things.
FYI: regarding driving impairment, the Brits studied this and concluded that you are impaired while stoned however, their test subjects were aware that they are impaired and drove a little slower and gave more room to the car in front of them resulting in a greater safety margin than the impairment created.

Just take a Vacation to somewhere where is is legal. Like Amsterdam or somewhere. If you don't smoke that often it will make the experience that much better.....and legal!

I know. I know. It is really stupid.

You cannot overdose on marijuana. You can overdose on alcohol. Marijuana does not make you violent or cause high speed accidents. Alcohol does.

It is mind boggling.
