My spouse and I have visit Negril, Jamaica 6 times, most recently over St. Patrick's Day this year. We have never had any problems roaming the beach, walking down Norman Manley Blvd., visiting the Roundabout, having a Red Stripe at quaint little beach bars and roadside bars. You must just say "no" a lot to those trying to sell you something and continue on your way. Not once have we felt in danger, had any Jamaican treat us badly, and will be going back as soon as we can. Jamaicans are the most accommodating friendly people on any island that we have visited, and we have visited a few. But, like any other place, there are exceptions. There are exceptions in tourist areas in the good old USA. I would not hesitate to visit Negril, Jamaica and have a good time.

I've been to Ocho Rios and I have friends who have been to Negril and Ocho Rios. My friends prefer Negril because the beaches and water are better. They have never had a problem when they've gone. Here's a tip. Find a bartender at your resort and find out when his day off is. Pay him $50.00 and have him take you around. My friends did this and had the time of their lives. They were very safe and got to see alot of things they wouldn't have seen on a regular tour for a lot less money. The bartender was glad to take them because $50.00 down there is alot of money. Good luck and have a great time.

Negril is very safe compared to many other areas. Don't wonder off on your own, stay with a friend though. If you stay at Sandals beach resort, they you have to go on the huge trampoline in the water.

Jamaica is just like any other country. If you plan to leave your resort on your own that could be a problem. If you would like to see the island you really need to have the concierge at the resort set you up with a tour/tour guide. It is not really too smart to venture out on your own, unless you are traveling with a group. When visiting the island last year, friends and I
(mixed company) went to a bar in town in Ochos Rio, and some of the native women were very disrespectful towards us. Well, let me clear that up. They were disrespectful to the women in our group. For example going to the bathroom was unsuccessful because the women blocked the bathroom door and stood their ground. We were in walking distance of the resort so we just left. It was very disappointing because we were there to have a good time. Also know this Sundays are considered to be a public holiday. Most businesses outside of the resorts shut down on Sunday! I hope this helps you.

I found the Negril area very nice, I felt very safe. But--we stayed at Sandals, and it was a controlled environment, which the hotel tries its best to keep you under. Literally, as soon as you leave the hotel walls, there are independant vendors (and yes, pot vendors!). Yet, they, too seemed quite nice, didn't badger you like they do in Mexico, and were pretty anxious to strike up a real conversation, not just harrangue you to buy something...so it was interesting.

We ended up going around with a guide we met on one of the excursions, who drove us around wherever we wanted, went to nite time music venues to see "real" regee, etc. and he was nice, funny, and cheap. He was working on the side.

There is a cool new excursion there, a bike ride from mountain top to low lands (butterfly farm--lovely woman who owns the ranch)....well worth your time. Guides take really good care of you, are entertaining and everyone has a good time. You go through "real" Jamaica.

Everyone is poorer than poor there, but all the staff we came across were delightful, hospitible, and eager to please.

We loved it.

Now the Kingston/airport area.....mabey not so much.

Negril is nice compared to a lot of other places in Jamaica, however everywhere you go in Jamaicca there are lots of people begging for money and trying to sell you drugs. Stick with the tourist buses and such. Stay in your resort. Overall I would say it is not a safe place to travel alone on your own.

Jamaica does have a high rate of crime. There's a lot of drug use and drug trafficking, and certain areas of cities like Kingston are not safe to travel after dark.

Negril is one of the safer areas, but there will be plenty of opportunistic locals who are willing to sell anything from drugs to crafts to... well, pretty much anything. Don't leave anything lying around unattended (even in the hotel) and don't wear anything particularly expensive if you don't want to get robbed.

Jamaica isn't really very safe anymore. Most of the better hotels have heavy security, and you are not safe driving around. There are too many bad areas in Jamaica, be very careful there.
