Ok I have a male russian tortoise now in a rubbermaid tub. I am getting a female russian tortoise and need to build a tortoise table so they have more room. What is the min. size that a male and female tortoise can stay together, so the female has room to get away from the female, all the website I have been to only tell me the min. size to keep ONE russian tortoise, not only do I need to know the min size for 2 to stay together, but there is a boy and girl, which I hear since the female "needs her space" in a way you need to make it a little better? Anybody out there have a russsian tortoise and can help me out?

There is a lot of debate about indoor housing sizes. The bare minimum is 100 square inches per inch of shell (measured WITH the curve in this case), but some authorities would go as high as 10 times that.

Other experts say to use a 8'x4' for a single adult, and add another 8x4 for each additional tortoise. Others use a 8'x8' space and add 50-75% more for each tortoise.

Bottom line- no one has any science to know for sure, but the happiest tortoises come from the biggest pens!

It is my experience that a tort table over about 8'x4' becomes awkward to work with. If it is mainly a wintertime pen or just used for young torts it should be OK.

Also- understand that it is HARD to raise successful, happy, healthy Russians indoors. This species does MUCH better in outdoor pens.

Hi the bigger the better, you will hear many opinions on the subject but the truth is tortoises need plenty of room perhaps more than most tables can provide, choose the largest that you can afford and house.

Hello...bout all I can do is give you the reptile site/ store that we use, they might be able to help you, or check with some Turtle & Tortoise rescue centers or sites ...beings they are quite the diggers, am sure you're going to have to dig a trench of some sort to lay in some kind of non rusting wire, to help prevent escape when they are outside !! Take Care :)

I like it, but it doesnt look that big, he is a pretty good size. But it is good to have red leaf food, it is really good for their shell, and it wont become dull. And other then that, it looks really good. And your water dish idea is really good. They love to go to the bathroom in their water dishes. And they are known to get eye infecections from it.
