Pub opening hours were lowered from 5 AM - 12.30 PM to 12.00 AM - 2.30 PM and 6.30 PM - 9.30 PM. Imagine having a man around the house, looking at the clock, waiting for the pubs to open.

The introduction of British Summer Time could have had an effect too.

Do you mean the "Defense of the Realm Act"? According to the provisions of this act life stunk for everyone.
