Red carpet events are organized by people who make a hobby out of inflating other peoples egos.
These people are called sycophants. The red carpet is wide to accommodate the ego, not the person. The owner is actually irrelevant.
What follows is usually a series of speeches where everyone tells everyone else how wonderful they are thus inflating egos out of any sense or proportion.
Egos need a lot of space and cannot bear to be touched by other egos.
Eventually the egos float off in to the air to where they cant be seen any more. Because egos that cant be seen, cant exist then they simply 'pop' in to non-existence leaving the hapless owner to fall in to oblivion.
Meanwhile the sycophants remain on the ground busily pumping up more egos and taking the owners money.

Red carpet events are usually exclusive (meaning "by invitation only") and are commonly arranged as media opportunities.
The Emmy Awards would be one example. The red carpet area is used for arriving celebrities, and the path they walk on is designed to lead them first by stands of fans, and then by the media, including a small pen full of photographers.
