On the underside, a circuit board is visible. there are also holes where it looks like some sort of cover should go-is this what it's supposed to be like?

Yep, the screw holes are for fixing it to different types of cradle.

some hard drives come like this richy,however you can buy covers that go over drives to protect them,ask at your local p.c shop
ive had a few drives were you can see the bottom of the drive,just make sure you dont touch any part of it,just place it in your p.c as soon as possible
some hard drives come with a plate on the bottom,but what you may find is the hard drive you have has probally come out of a pre built p.c such as a dell p.c,as when these are built they are built with the manufacturer not expecting the consumer to open the p.c
again ,just be careful you dont touch any printed circuit boards.

Yes, that's exactly what its supposed to look like. Also, make sure that it isn't positioned with that underside pressing up against the metal of the case... I've had problems occur.

well ya most drives are like that just dont touch the circuit board u may fry it then ur drive is crap

yep, that's absolutely normal.
DON'T touch the exposed circuitry, it will kill the drive.
