I don't really agree with your statement/question. The government hasn't done anything to make people use cars. People use cars for everything because they are lazy. I know people who drive two blocks to the store just because they don't want to walk. Most metropolitan cities in the US (especially the East Coast) have very good public transportation systems. I can't say the same for CA but that's because most people are "too good" to take public transportation here. We should really invest more money into public transportation so that we catch up to our European counterparts. In Madrid, you can get anywhere in the city using public transportation so that's what most people use.......

Wait, the GOVERNMENT made it this way?

No, people buying houses in the suburbs an hour from their jobs made it this way.

I lived in Chicago without a car for 3 years. I went to college and never had a car on campus. Where I live NOW... I went for a month between cars without problems (two adults in the household... we have 1 car, 1 bike, and 3 bus routes within 2 blocks of our house).

You can live without a car. You just have to realize that each decision that you make will affect the other aspects of your life. If you live in a McMansion in the Exurbs, then you are going to need a car. If you live in a major city (or college town), then you do not need one.

I don't think the government is responsible for our reliance on cars, but I know what you mean.

I live and work in the suburbs of the Kansas City area and the there is no mass transit system I can use to get back and fourth to work even if I wanted too!

Urban sprawl in Kansas City contributes to the difficulty in having an effective mass transit system; I have heard that the busing system is fairly reliable and safe, but I can't use it so I don't know!

Not having a car does cut down on the opportunities for work as well. Even if you do have access to a great mass transit system, your still limited to finding employment with in reasonable distances of stops or stations.

I do not agree with the premise of your question. In the US the government has not forced anyone out of public transportation and into private transportation. Most cities have a public transit service, which does just the opposite. It makes transportation cheaper on a public bus than by private car. We pay for that cheap transportation...even those who don't use it... with tax dollars.

no diverse work locations made it that way. Also crime on public transportation made it so people dont want to risk it. The riots in 1968 changed the landscape of most cities. The races seperated, and chose not to intermingel. You can deny it, but its the truth in a lot of American cities. My Grandma never had a drivers license she took the bus everywhere. Now no one does. There arent a lot of concentrated downtowns either

the natural progression of commerce and technology have made in neccesary to use a car. Why? Because it's one of the most efficient methods of travel. What does the government have to do with that?

How have people like you survived as long as you have without even the most basic knowledge as to how the world you live in functions?

you don't need a car to live....

you are so backward.

I think it would be great if more money was put into public transportation...

You have no right to state your opinion if you don't know the facts.
