When do "Missed Miscarriages" occur? Is it very early into the pregnancy (like a couple of weeks) or a little later? Also, I've read that these types of miscarriages cause a woman to have little or no bleeding because the fetus is absorbed back into the body. Is this true? And, if the woman experiences no bleeding or expulsion, is it absolutely necessary that she get whatever is left removed from her uterus? Does sometimes it pass out on its own, or is it possible that it gets completely absorbed and you never know? I have been researching this for hours and am getting different answers.

A missed miscarriage is when the body does not recognize the death of an unborn child and does not automatically abort. Most often happens in the first 12 weeks.

Many women do not realize that their child has died, but often the body may simply begin to miscarry within a few days. If it becomes clear that the body is not going to miscarry the doctor will either give medication to expel the tissue (if the pregnancy is early) or if it is later they will do a D&C to remove.

This happened to me at 10 weeks, started spotting and then bleeding heavier. Then had an ultasound to identify the problem and found out there was no heartbeat. My doctor told me that if I did not expel everything that I would have to have a D&C done - but over the next week I miscarried (believe me you will know when this happens - like no period you have ever had). But no, the tissue does not absorb back into the body - if your body does not naturally expel you would have to have a D&C.
