Was the love story fictionalized? Did William Wallace really have a wife that was killed? Also, was Longshank's son really gay?

As for his wife, the best known record of this information came from "The Acts and Deeds of Sir William Wallace, Knight of Elderslie" by the 15th century minstrel Blind Harry. This work is purported to be a piece of creative writing, creating a myth-history rather than empirical historical document, and is responsible for much of the legend encompassing Wallace. "Braveheart" is based on the poem.

Also, historically speaking, Edward (Longshank's son) was not labelled as a homosexual but was known for his favor of men. :)
