Recent law grad & recently unemployed for 8 months. I know loans are unaffected but I have probably $11-13K in other debts. It has been suggested I will be hit for 7 years either way, but with bankruptcy, the clock starts now vs. paying for 2-3 years...in MN if it matters.

Bankrupcty is complex, and should only be used when your debt can never be repaid. You should consult with bankrutpcy attorney.

Having a bankruptcy on your record for a $13k debt is a bad trade-off. Every future employer and savy client from now till forever will see that in the public record.... and it will not reflect well on you. Perhaps you should try to find a job. If MN does not have good prospects, there are lots of jobs for entry level lawyers on the East Coast. Bankruptcy for an individual is more than a short term business decision.... by not repaying loans received in good faith, it amounts to stealing. Bad way to start a legal career.
If you can't make the payments, get a part time job anywhere, even flipping burgers would be better than stealing.

I can't really say if you should file bankruptcy. You may want to talk to a financial expert and see if what is the best for you. But just wanted to let you know if you file Chapter 13 bankruptcy you can include you student loans. Chapter 13 is where the courts make a payment plan for you to pay back a portion of your debt. So you do pay some money back but not the full amount and it will allow you to include your student loans. So you may want to think about that.

Bankruptcy is never a good option. Plus, there are good odds now that you will have to file Ch 11 and pay most of your debt anyway. New laws have been passed making it very difficult to file Ch 7.

You should contact a bk attorney in your area, look in the phone book for one that gives a free consultation, if you were in NC, you could file Chapter 7 with no problem, it is not that difficult..
