My sister and I figured this out as kids playing with our gold jewelry it became a good test of whose bf was cheap.
Gold does not stick to magnets fake gold almost always does. So yes I do agree with giving it to a woman as a method of finding out. ;)
However I have included a link that back this up I hope this helps.

Pure gold is heavy and maleable. It is also a more yellowy color. Most gold is mixed with other metals, so its purity content can change it's indentifiable markings.
Fake gold is called "pyrite" It is found in coal mines and is much lighter than gold.
Gold weighs about as much as Lead. Pyrite is like a regular rock, it is smoother than gold and comes in larger pieces.

Atomic Absorption Spectrometry (AAS). A flame heats the material, the energy makes photons radiate, and each material has it's own color-spectrum. (Barium makes green flames, Copper blue for example) If you compare the spectrum with the literature, that's how you can see it on a scientific way.

There are a number of standard chemical and spectroscopic tests. See http://www.gold.org/jewellery/technology/assay/index.html for a fairly complete discussion.
