the term relates to a lack of means or opportunity which prevents a group in society from achieving that which is more readily attainable to the greater society. it can be a broad term with some holding that being born into poverty or an economic condition which cannot afford a chance for decent higher education qualifies as such. basically its a lack of financial means suffered by a group which shuts them off from certain opportunities in society.

The family is at a disadvantage, compared to other families. If this family has a household income that is one half the average income, the family is at an economic disadvantage, because they have less money to live on. There is also a social disadvantage in that the family has to live in a low rent area, or buy a house in an area where values are the lowest. It may mean the neighborhood is unsafe or the child cannot get a good education at the school in the town where the parent lives.
