Let "g" be number of George's books, and "a" the number of Ann's:
g + a = 24 (24 books between them)
g = a + 2 (George has two more than Ann)
Substitute the second equation into the first (replace "g" with "a+2"), and solve for a:
g + a = 24
(a + 2) + a = 24
2a = 22
a = 11
Ann has 11 books.
To check your answer, remember that George has two more (11+2=13), and that the sum (13+11) should equal 24.

First you try and find the number of books that George has say that you first try 15 then subtract by 2 and then you would get 13, but thats not the answer because it doesnt add up to 24 so keep on trying and you would get george=13 ann=11

if you want a simple computation,
you take away what george has over ann.
24-2 = 22
then you divide the remaining number by the two people, george and anne.
22/2 = 11.
so anne had 11 books.
to put it in a formula.
x = anne's books
x+2 = george's books
george + anne's books together = 24 so
x + (x+2) = 24
2x +2 = 24
2x = 24 - 2
2x/2 = 22/2
x = 11

George = Ann+2
George + Ann = 24
If George = Ann+2 then
(Ann+2)+Ann = 24
2Ann+2=24
Subtract 2 from both sides...
2Ann+2-2=24-2
2Ann=22
Ann=11
George=Ann+2
If Ann = 11 Then we can say
George=11+2
George=13
George=13 Ann=11 Answer....

If i'm reading this right, there are 24 books between the two of them.
24 / 2 = 12 a piece if they are splitting them evenly.
If george has two more than ann, george has 13 and ann has 11.

Simple way to answer...
George should have 2 books more than Ann...
give off 2 books to George...remaining 22 books devide between them....so, 11 each
George gets 13 ( 2 + 11 = 13)
Ann gets 11

lets make it in a literal translation:
George + Ann = 24 books
George = 2 books + Ann
therefore: 2 books + Ann + Ann = 24 books
2Ann = 24 books - 2 books
2Ann = 22 books (divide both by 2)
therefore: Ann = 11 books. (simple logic, eh?) **answer
to check: George = 11 + 2 = 13 books
13 + 11 = 24 books!

24 divided by 2=12
George has 12 books +2=14 books.
Ann has 12 books because she and George half their books.

Let say George = x
and Ann = y
then the sentence is now: x and y share 24
and : x had 2 more than y
or
x+y=24
x=y+2
puting y+2 in for x from the second line into the first line yeilds
(y+2)+y=24
solve for y: 2+2y=24
2y=22
y=11
put this back into either of the original equations:
x=y+2
x=11+2
x=13
so: x=13 and y=11
