We were told to ONLY give water to our 4 month old if he was constipated, and even then it was only 2 ounces.

The rest of the baby's nutrients should be received from formula or breast milk.

Only do this if a doctor tells you for some medical reason. Other than that there is no reason to give a 4 months old water. They get all the water they need in breastmilk/formula.

there isn't a NEED to do so.

breastmilk and formula have a high percentage of water in them.

too much water in baby's diet can actually over-dilute their bloodstream and cause problems.

In third world countries, women often think they can make the formula spread farther by adding too much water to it, then their babies died because they weren't getting proper nutrition.

NOW- as a mom of 5 kids, if it is really hot or the bbay sweats a lot, it's no big deal to let them have a few sips of water. at 4 months they might be interested in holding a sippy cup and water is a great thing to start with.

If you are breastfeeding then there is no need to give the baby water unless the baby is constipated...

If you are feeding the baby formula then it is usually a good idea to give the baby water (only about an ounce or two) every day.

If you are feeding the baby cereal, you can give it some water to drink. They can have water, but it should never replace the milk/formula in the baby's diet.
If you live in an un-airconditioned house, you should give an infant water during the hot summer months to prevent dehydration.

Yes it is ok to give your baby water. Both of my kids have been water drinkers since they were about 3-4 months old. I asked my Dr. and she said as long as you don't replace formula bottles with water then there isn't a problem. Both of mine(4yr and1yr) are big water drinkers still. It is my 4 yr olds favorite drink. I never gave either of them juice, personal choice there, just breast milk, formula, and water.

As for is there a need? I did it because in my mind everyone needs a cool rinse. Imagine having 'milk mouth' for oh, say, a year? Gross. Hydration, bowel movements, all need fluids.

I hope they grow up to big water drinkers. Water is life!!
Hope that this was helpful to you...good luck

it's not going to kill him, but there really isn't a need to do so.
excessive water can cause his sodium levels to go whacky and that is a bad deal.

so, my pediatrician said no water unless he is outside in the heat and my be getting overheated and isn't necessarily hungry.
even then, i just give him sips.

so, i would just feed him formula or breastmilk when he's hungry and do cereal or oatmeal when he's ready mixed with formula or breastmilk.
i'd steer clear of water.
it can give baby a false feeling of being full and mess with sodium levels.

take care:)

to both of those questions the answer is no. you shouldnt give a 4 month old water because they get plenty of it from breast milk and or formula. it is better to fill them up with nutrients than water.

At 4 months, you are not supposed to ever give water, only breast milk (Preferrably) Then of course is the Formula is the other option. But at that age, those 2 things are the only thing you should be giving.

At one time, I asked my pediatrician this question and she said that babies do not need aditional water. Like everyone has said, they are getting their water supply from formula (think about that) and breastmilk.
