In my opinion, you would be wise to hold off until Vista SP1 arives later this year, but because there is a general suspicion that SP1 is being rushed out because of this very advice (the first service pack has never arrived this soon before from Microsoft)- holding out until SP2 will be a safer option unless you have a legitimate need to use Vista sooner.

For most home users, there is absolutely no need or even reason to upgrade unless they are buying a new computer which comes with it anyway, as the only potentially useful feature Vista offers over XP is DirectX 10, and initial testing of it shows dismal performance even if you do have the £300+ graphics-card which is needed to have any chance of seeing any real improvement.

If for some reason you feel you must have Microsoft's latest and ... well latest, we'll reserve the greatest for when it has stood the test of time, head on over to
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/windowsvista/buyorupgrade/upgradeadvisor.mspx
and download Microsoft's Vista Upgrade advisor to see if your computer is ready for the "upgrade". Be warned, that unless you have at least 1GB of memory, and a 1.5GHz processor, it is more likely to be a downgrade even if it the advisor says "yes". And if it recommends Vista Home Basic, forget it altogether as that offers nothing significant over XP for you except decreased performance.

Generally the best rule of thumb for Microsoft products, especially OS's is to wait till the first Service Pack is released. this is usually within 6-12 months of launch and it is created as a result of all the failures, problems, conflicts, etc. and tends to be much more stable and unpredictable.

Most of the major bugs will be gone for SP1 (service pack 1). Similar scenario to XP.
I'm waiting until SP1 before upgrading, personally.
p.s. I've installed it, used it (several times) & it's nice....or will be when a few of those niggles are corrected.

The rule of thumb with Mickeysoft software is after service pack 1. I have used it think irt's rubbish and have had users come to me asking how to go back to XP as they can't work cause all the software is incompatible.

Wait a year, or until the first sevice pack appears, if you want to be "safe". If you want to be daring and take a chance, do it now. It is nt going to "change" or "improve" anytime in the near future.
