A biopsy is when they take a sample, tissue, and run tests on it to see if something is present or affecting someone's health.

A urologist inserts a small hollow cylindrical instrument through the urethra (the channel from bladder to vaginal vestibule) into the bladder. The instrument is called a cystoscope, and the urologist can then look at the inside of the bladder. Through this instrument he or she can insert an instrument that grabs a tiny sample of the bladder lining. Sometimes several samples are taken. These bits of tissue are then sent to a pathology laboratory for analysis.

The procedure is uncomfortable, but usually not painful. It can be performed without an anesthetic in many cases.

As for why the procedure has been recommended in your mother's case, you should ask the urologist.

A biopsy (in Greek: bios = life and opsy = look/appearance) is a medical test involving the removal of cells or tissues for examination. The tissue is often examined under a microscope and can also be analyzed chemically.

Biopsy specimens are often taken when the cause of a disease is uncertain.

A bladder biopsy involves the doctor or doctors removing cells from your mother's bladder so they can better attempt to fix the problem she is having.

Hope this helps and hope the biopsy for your mom goes smoothly.

I am going with Eddie on this one.
Interstitial cystitis is very painful and urination is frequent.
Usually small amounts. sometimes up to 4 or 5 times an hour.

A urologist finds bladder wall inflammation, pinpoint bleeding or ulcers during an exam with a special scope (called a cytoscope) that looks inside your bladder. This is done by filling the bladder with water to stretch it out.

Do NOT drink cranberry or orange juice or any acidic juice.
No coffee or tea.
NO soda or pop.
Blueberry juice only and read the label. sometimes they mix other juices in with it.
NO spicy foods.
No store bought tomatoes. no acidic foods like pineapple. No curry
Watch everything you eat and drink.
These two things will help control IC better than anything.
It is also an easy test for her to try. Start now. In a few days it should be somewhat better.
There is no real cure, but there are medications to help.

Doctors probably think she has interstitial cystitis - a general inflammation of the bladder without a specific cause. A biopsy would help them get a better look at the bladder tissue and determine if there is something wrong. I'm just giving you general information so for a better understanding, please talk with you/her doctor.

A biopsy is where the doctor takes a small sample of tissue and sends it to a pathology lab where it will be studied to determine if there are abnormal cells.

Your mother should talk to her doctor if she has questions. He/she will want your mother to ask questions so that she can be as well informed as possible.
