I applied to several post Bac programs and the tension is killing me. I called the admissions office asking when I could get my rejection or acceptance letters. They told me at the very latest June 1. Since it is almost June 1 and I haven't heard anything from them I'm assuming I've been rejected. But why do they give out rejection letters last? Why can't they give them out first so the rejects can move on?

It appears that you really need to relax! First of all it's not June 1st yet - that's a week away. It also seems that June 1st is the date that they are going to post the letters - the date you will receive them could be even later than that. Secondly, it simply doesn't follow that a late answer has to be a negative one. It could just as easily be an acceotance letter. Best of luck, anyway...

This does not mean you have been rejected.
I recently applied for my masters and I recieved my 2 rejection letters first in Feb then in april my 2 acceptances, and I found out just 2 weeks ago i was waitlisted at the last.

So they are waiting for the other students they have accepted to accept/defer enrollment before they let you off the waitlist and into the program. The fact that it is taking do long is actually a prety good sign.

I know 5-6 other people that were waitlisted just the same wasy and 5 have already been taken off the waitlist and into the program just this week. But all schools have their different time tables.

Good luck

It isn't almost June 1st. You have 9 more days.

1. The Admissions Office is probably waiting to hear from "everyone." If some of the applicants turn down their admissions, then more openings are available.

2. Each college and university do this differently. Keep in mind that the end of term may be coming up and the office staff is busy organizing records for commencement, etc.

3. Keep in mind that staff go on vacation. That may delay your response as well.

4. Colleges and universities are BIG bureaucracies. Things move slowly. Try to be patient.
Keep the faith. You never know!

Logically I would say:

1) Perhaps they don't know who is rejected until after they've accepted all open positions...

and
2) Perhaps they expect that you are not "waiting to hear back" from them, and that you should have applied to more than one university?

Rejection letters are sent out last because more openings may come up when acceptees say no.
