I want to adopt a dog but do not know what kind to get. A small toy dog, or one you can actually play with like a german shepard?

working dogs like GSD's require a lot of commitment and time.....are you willing to spend time socializing, training (obedience and beyond)?
GSD's are extremely loyal and easy to train, but because of their working temperament they are easily bored and can become destructive. their loyalty is remarkable, but because of this they are also what I like to call "velcro-dogs" they thrive on companionship and can get very depressed and even get OCD when left alone for long periods of time. if you have the time to invest in this type of dog and have an active lifestyle...go for it....they are fantastic dogs....if you are looking for a couch potato and one that doesn't need tons of interaction then go for a smaller breed.

What moron told you you can't actually play with small dots?

If anything, small dogs are more playful than large dogs. I currently own a 15 pound Miniature Schnauzer and a 115 pound Great Pyrnees. The Mini Schnauzer is far more active and playful than the Pyr.

Another advantage to the toy dogs is that you can put them in a pocket, or carrying bag and go everywhere. Try that with a full grown Pyr or Rottie!

If you have plenty of room, especially a large fenced yard, and want a big dog, go for it. Just be aware that big dogs can reach places that little dogs can't and a big dog's tail can clear a coffeetable in 1.3 seconds flat.

I love big dogs, and I love little dogs. Due to my age and other things, Mattie, my Pyr, will probably be my last big dog.

Toy dog. Those big ones, unless you have lots of room for them and lots of time, will get bored and chew stuff and dig up your yard, especially labs. My lab was a houdini, she was ALWAYS getting out.

Get one between 10 and 20 pounds. That should be perfect.

I have both and the toy dogs are much easier to take care of. Less food, less exercise needed, less shedding, more loving....but it really depends on what you are looking for.
