My G4 moniter has been going dim and the light in the corner starts blinking in intervals of three. Any ideas as to what causes this?

There is not a monitor called G4 so maybe you mean a monitor attached to a PowerMac G4? Could be attached to a PowerBook G4 or iBook G4 but it's the same monitor; either an Apple Studio Display or Apple Cinema Display. As a matter of fact, it could be attached to a Windows box if the video card has the correct connection.

There are different patterns of three blinks for these types of monitors: short-long-short, short-short-short or the dreaded short-short-long. The last pattern means hardware failure; either bad cable connection or monitor needs service. See the diagnosis from Apple in the link below:

There are some other possibilities.

1.) The energy saver settings need adjusting you do this by opening system preferences and clicking on the light bulb. There will be two bars the one on the bottom adjusts how long the computer waits, when there is no activity, to turn the screen off.

2.) In the same window the top bar adjust how long the computer waits, when there is no activity, to put the machine to sleep. Either way the machine should come back on when a key is pressed.

3.) There is a problem with the monitor ar the machine.

It might be a battery issue:

Or it could be a problem with the monitor itself, a connection from the computer to the monitor, or something else entirely.
