There are supposed to be no differences between the adult version & the children's version of the books.

The only difference that I am currently aware of is that the covers are different. The reasoning behind this (that I've heard) is that many adults found the covers too childish, & felt embarrassed to be seen reading a kid's book. From what I've heard, not many people really felt that overly self concious, but many people prefer the adult versions for the lovely covers.

Below is a link to the Leaky Lounge, one of the web's biggest HP sites. It's a thread about the different covers of the versions, not to mention the mention of the different international covers.

There are absolutely no differences between the adult and children versions other than the covers. It's a mental thing... the adult covers are more mature looking so that adults don't feel silly reading a "children's" book. (Although, I think it can be argued that if enough adults are reading it to constitute an adult-cover version, they might not be completely within the "children" genre)
