I believe this is to stop click fraud or someone programming to ping the server non-stop.

How is this done? What is this called as? Is there open source that can accomplish the task?

It is to make sure some automated task (spammer) is not trying to sneak in and generate junk directed at the site. (The automated spammer task hopefully has no eyeballs to read the randomly generated character string and respond by typing it back in.) The process is known as captcha.
